Alex Schulte: Hi, I am Alex Schulte with the Washington Sailing Marina's Summer Sailing School and I am teaching you how to sail. This is capsize recovery and how to avoid a capsize when sailing. If you capsize there are several steps to recovering your boat. If you are sailing with a partner, the first thing you want to do is make sure your partner is okay. Next you swim around the stern of the boat to where the daggerboard is sticking out from underneath of the boat. Next you jump up and grab the daggerboard at its tip and pull it down so that the boat rights itself. Once the boat is righted you can crawl back into your boat pull in your main-sail and sail away. There are several things you can to do avoid capsizing however, the first thing you can do to avoiding capsizing is by leaning out on the high side if your boat starts tipping.
The next thing you can do to avoid capsizing is to let your sail out in order to let some wind out of your sails. The last thing you can do is put the tiller towards the sail a little bit which will point you towards the wind, which will slow your boat down and flatten your boat out. That was capsize recovery and how to avoid a capsize. Next is how to stop your sail boat and docking.
