College counselor Jerome A. Cole, MA discusses the importance of using the computer to fill out a college application, rather than hand writing the application.

Speaker: Should a student handwrite or type their college application?

Jerome Cole:I think that in most cases, we want our young people to type and using a computer to fill out a college application. The one thing, the idea of handwriting a college application doesn't really sound like a great idea to me. What I'll be concerned about is, one; could I understand, the writing is legible. The second thing is errors. If you make an error, I guess, if you are using a pen, you could erase it, or pencil, you could erase it, but that's not something that you want to do. One of the things that you as a student want to keep in mind is that as you are completing this application and once you have submitted, you are going to be assessed not only on how well you completed the application, but its appearance. So if you handwrite it, it's probably not going to look as good as if you type that or use the computer. So I would recommend that students use the computer and type that application. Unless you have perfect handwriting and you don't make any mistakes, then send it in handwrite; but otherwise, I think want to stick with the computer.
