College counselor Jerome A. Cole, MA discusses the importance of setting realistic deadlines for yourself so your application arrives at the college in plenty of time.

Speaker: Should students personally deliver or overnight their college application?

Jerome Cole:I think that we talked earlier about submitting applications and what you want to do ideally is put yourself in a position where you can put that in the mail, so that it arrives at the college prior to the deadline; but if in fact you find yourself in a situation where you have to overnight it or personally deliver it and that is an option, then I would say go ahead and do that. There is certainly no advantage to a student actually hand carrying and personally delivering an application, as there is no advantage to overnighting an application, unless in fact you are up against that deadline, which goes back to what I said previously about setting realistic deadlines for yourself and making sure that your application is going to be completed in time, so that they can be put in the mail and send off. Colleges don't really like to receive those overnight packages. That just adds to the administrative burden and in terms of a student walking into an Admission's Office and handing off an application, that's something that I think college would prefer that students not do. So, I'll say, you want to avoid that; plan ahead, be proactive and don't put yourself in the position where you have to overnight.
