Tomas Sbertoli: Hi! I am Tomas Sbertoli, Director of Snowsports here at Wintergreen Resort in Virginia. Today I am teaching you how to snowboard. We have practiced a little bit with the heel side slide and the straight run with one foot out. Now we are going to put that second foot in and see if we can master a little heel side sliding and straight running and even that straight run, brushing out the heel side slide. So that we can stop and get comfortable with that here before we move on to the lift. The first thing you are going to want to do is strapping that back foot. It's easier to do it sitting on the ground for first time gliders. They will get comfortable. Get strapped in there, nice and snug. The next trick is trying to stand up. The easiest way to do this is to walk yourself forward, get the board underneath you and then use the hand to reach forward and pull yourself to a standing position.
Again, same thing we worked on last time. We are just going to walk the board a little bit, get it moving, stand on a good athletic stance and let the board just slide down the hill and feather the edge to stop. Once you are on a comfortable position, then we are going to walk the board around and point it down the hill and glide. Once we want to stop that glide, then just brush out more with the back foot and pull up on the toes. So it's come to a nice even stop.
The next thing we are going to do is actually go to the chairlift and try this on a open slope with a gentle pitch to it. So we can get used to this feeling out on the hill.
