Sherry Tyra: Anytime of the year with good weather is the perfect time to get rid of unwanted items in your home and earn a little money in the process. I am going to show a few tips and tricks for planning a stress free yard sale.
If you live in a community that has an annual sale, you may want to participate or plan your sale for that same weekend or join together with neighbors and have multiple sales on the same dates.
Advertise for free; post announcements on community boards and check local organizations for free space in newsletters and bulletins. Use free online ad services and alert your social networks to the sale.
Be creative with your ad, the more interesting and detailed you make your ad, the more people will want to attend your sale. Put out signs the evening before or the morning of the sale. Make sure that the signs are legible and attention getting. Make sure you use an arrow to show the direction of the sale.
Be sure to check for local laws pertaining to sign placement. Many communities don't allow signs to be posted on public right-of-ways, including light poles or street signs. Instead, try using a homemade anchor to display your signs. Take a shopping, bag fill it with rocks or gravel and tape the top of the bag around the post for your sign.
Hold your sale over the course of one or two days, ideally on a weekend, but avoid major holidays. People tend to frequent a sale on the first or second day after that it's assumed that most of the good items are gone.
Have fun and enjoy meeting new people, you'll be surprised that how much of your unwanted goods will sell. Happy garage selling!
