Amy McGorry: Your hair and scalp evolve as you grow older, things to shifting hormones, dietary changes, certain medications and external damage from sun and styling among other factors.
Whether you find your hair becoming coarser and drier, finer and flatter or just a little grayer, as it changes, so should your product regimen and styling routine. Here are a few tips to keep your strands shiny, strong and bouncing no matter what your age.
First, watch your diet. What's happening on the inside of your body can reveal itself in your hair. Hair is made of keratin, a form of protein, so don't skimp on protein packed lean meats, fish, eggs and low-fat dairy products. To increase shine, get plenty of healthy omega-3 fats which are found in fatty fish like salmon and walnuts. Nutrition interventions take time; expect to show off new shine in about six months.
Second, take your vitamins. Certain vitamins and minerals have been shown to help increase hair growth in volume. Look for a supplement containing the B vitamin Biotin which helps prevent breakage as well as apple extract which has been shown in studies to promote hair growth.
As an added bonus research shows that Biotin increases nail thickness by 25% making nails less apt to split and tear. Third, choose the right pillow case. Your head weighs about 9 pounds and that's a lot of dead weight laying on top of your hair all night.
Tossing and turning with that weight is bound to break a few strands. For less breakage, choose a silk or satin pillow case. They won't absorb any of your hairs' precious natural oils and their smooth surfaces keep hair breakage free all night.
