Debbie Hanson: Hi, I am Debbie Hanson, professional angler and outdoor blogger. And today I am going to talk about the biggest mistakes that people often make when they are fishing.

The first mistake that people often make is putting sunscreen on their hands and then putting their hands in the bait well. You never want to put sunscreen on your hands and then stick your hands in the bait well because sunscreens, oils, lotions and fragrances are all toxic to fish and they will kill your bait.

Another mistake I see people often making is their choice of footwear. You never want to wear dark soled shoes on a boat. The deck of a boat is white and wearing dark soled shoes is going to cause scuff marks on the boat, and that will not make your captain very happy. So make sure you use non-marking soles when you board a boat.

The next thing you want to make sure that you do is use the bathroom before you leave the dock. It sounds like common sense, but I can't tell you how many times I've boarded a boat either with friends or boarded a charter boat and we've had to turn back because somebody inevitably forget to use the facilities before we left the dock.

And when you are ready to take a break from fishing, the one thing that you don't want to do is take your hook and attach it through the ceramic guide. When you do that what could happen is the hook can cause chips on the inside ceramic part of the guide which will cause your line to fray and could cause you to loose a huge fish.

And the final mistake that I often see people making is allowing too much slack in their line. When you allow too much slack in your line, it gives the fish the opportunity to shake its head and toss the hook causing you to loose what could have been a trophy catch.

So now that you know what mistakes to avoid, you'll reel in more fish and have a much better time when you are out there on the water.
