Dr. William McCarthy: Hi! I am Dr. William McCarthy of the Northern Virginia Area Bariatric Consultants Weight Loss Center. Today, I'm telling you how to overcome weight loss challenges. Now, I'll discuss the importance of exercise while trying to lose weight. Exercise is critical in weight loss, especially for long-term. Now, many of us have perhaps tried losing weight by merely exercising without trying to cut back on what we're eating. Many times it won't work, but once combined with a diet, exercise would greatly enhance the results.
With weight loss, we lose body mass. As we do that our metabolic rate may slow down. Exercise will help burn those extra calories. Why do we need exercise?
Most important reason is to limit the loss of lean body mass. Almost anyone who losses weight to a significant degree will lose some lean body mass. Exercise will help limit that loss. We have a weight-loss registry here in the United States that has been kept for a number of years. We have some of the characteristics of people who lost weight and almost every one of the people who have lost a lot of weight and kept it off for 5 years, were exercising 45 to 60 minutes per day.
So where do you start? My answer is, start wherever you are. If you are a person that only changes channels by flipping the remote control dial, perhaps it's time to get up and walk over to your television set. If you've medical problems or symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath, you need to consult your doctor before beginning an exercise program. So that's a little bit about the importance of exercise and your diet.
