College counselor Jerome A. Cole, MA discusses what resources you should take advantage of when writing your college essay, including your guidance counselor, your English teacher, and your parents.

Speaker: What additional resources should you solicit to complete your essay? Jerome Cole: I think you want to take advantage of your college counselor; you want to probably take advantage of your English teacher at you high school. These are people who help students' everyday write essays, they review them on a consistent basis. They have lots and lots of experience, so I would solicit their help. I would also ask for mom and dad to review my essay to get their input. The thing that you want to make sure that you do is, one; you want to make sure it is well written. The English teacher can certainly help in that area. You want to make sure that it is well written but you also want to make sure that it speaks to who you are, that it is genuine, that it tells the story. I think your parents can really help you with that and then the last thing, I think the counselor would be a good source to ask to review an application because that person reviews college application on an annual basis and has a sense of what is good; what is not so good; what colleges are expecting and so I think between those three different sources, those are people that I would rely on.
