Relationship expert Gloria MacDonald discusses how to make Valentine’s Day special and romantic for your significant other including what to do if you don’t care about the day.

Host: What if you do not care about Valentine's Day?

Gloria McDonald: I hear from lots and lots of people and particularly men like, why do I have to do this whole Valentine's Day crap. I cannot stand all the commercialism, the dozen red roses cost the fortune, the box of chocolates cost five tons as much as it normally would. So that is fine; if you do not want to get involved in the commercialism, that is absolutely fine. There is nothing wrong with that at all. So, again it goes back to understanding, what is important to your partner and are there ways in which you can tell your partner, show your partner that they are very special to you, that they are important to you. You know what, doing this is not about doing it once a year on one particular day. If you do this throughout the year in all kinds of different ways, then your partner will know that and they will understand that and they will appreciate that.

So, maybe what you need to do is find some other way and find some understanding between the two of you as a couple that you are just not going to get involved in all the commercialism and the hoop love, the chocolates and the candies and the champagne and the red roses and the dining out in the candle light and all that stuff and that is perfectly fine as long as both of you understand that and agree with that. In fact, you know again, make it an Un-Valentine's Day if you want to, do something different or just stay at home and be yourselves and be totally relaxed and comfortable; but it is really about finding ways to let your partner know throughout the year that you really care about them, that they are special, that you are trying to understand them and give to them and let them know that they are supported and cherished and loved and they are important to you.

So, it does not have to be just on Valentine's Day, especially if you really grade about doing that all year along; and hey! Create another day if you want. Maybe, if you really make a big deal out of each other's birthdays or your anniversary or something else and maybe, it does not have to be a special occasion. Sometimes, the very best gift and the most wonderful things are when it is just a total surprise, that is out of the blue, that is not attached to any particular day.
