Dating and relationship coach Toni Coleman discusses the importance of body language, including what is most important, reading or speaking body language.

Speaker: What is a more important ability, to read or speak good body language?

Toni Coleman: I think, it's almost more important to be able to speak body language than it is to read it. Of course that being said, if you are not reading it and you are letting it be in the dark a lot about what people are really feeling and how to respond to them; so it's almost as though they're evenly weighted, certainly in the new situation and dating situation, being aware of your body language and really focusing on what you are saying and how you are saying it, giving people the impression that you are confident, that you are comfortable, that you are happy to be there, showing an interest in what they are saying. Those kinds of things are going to bring back more positive language from them and are going to help them to feel better around you and then that is what of course you would be receiving; but, I think in any new situation speaking it and being aware of what you are saying is probably the first thing and then in time developing more of an ability to really pickup on what's going on with the people around you.
