Kathy Reily: Hello, I am Kathy Reily, coordinator of the Diabetes Program at Prince William Hospital in Manassas, Virginia. Now, we are going to talk about what diabetes is.
Host: What is diabetes?
Kathy Reily: Diabetes is a disease that is caused by a decrease in insulin production from the pancreas. Some people with diabetes will have no more insulin produced from the pancreas and some people with diabetes will have a reduced production of insulin from the pancreas. There is a condition that also goes along with it, in that some people are resistant to using the available insulin from their pancreas. As a result, with no insulin or reduced insulin the body is not able to process the sugar from the foods we eat and the blood sugar becomes elevated.
