Dr. John Schmitt recommends folic acid for women who want to become pregant.
Host: What kind of vitamins should a woman who wants to get pregnant take? Dr. John Schmitt: Well, I think of all the vitamins that you need in pregnancy the only one that has been proven to really be beneficial to women trying to conceive has been vitamins with folic acid which any good multiple-vitamin has. There have not been tremendous amounts of patient study that have shown a decrease in certain birth defects especially spina bifida and disorders of the spine. They have responded to women that supplement with folic acid. That said, any good multiple vitamin or a prenatal vitamin that has a little bit of extra folic acid is certainly helpful in anticipation of pregnancy.
