Host: What should a pregnant woman do if she learns she is carrying multiples? Dr. John Schmitt: Well, after the initial freak out period if as they learn they are carrying multiples, most of that can be alleviated with education. I think the biggest risk that they are going to face with multiple births is the risk of premature delivery. So a lot of educational activity takes place. We educate them about signs and symptoms of premature labor and talk to them about increasing their rest and hydration and be on the lookout for signs like that. We talk about that it may well be necessary for them to stop or decrease work later in pregnancy, the need for bed-rest and give them an idea of what to expect but overall we try to allay their fears and put them at ease as much as we can, yet be realistic about, yes, she have to be followed a little bit closer and there is some potential for more problems associated with that.
