Dr. Nina Solenski: It is absolutely important to do your homework before anything serious like this happens. One of the important things to look at is whether or not a hospital is accredited specifically in stroke care. That's known as a primary stroke center. Those centers that carry that designation and also need to be accredited by the Joint Commission specifically have gone through a very rigorous evaluation to make sure that they can give very, very high quality care to their stroke patients. So having that designation guarantees you that you will have the best possible care that you can. So that's very important. The hope is that all of these hospitals can be identified in your region. If not, I suggest that you go to the Joint Commission's website. They actually list all of those hospitals and you can find out for yourself what's available regionally.
